The following information is based on an actual advertisement during the year 1888 - Theodore B. Starr - Fifth Ave. Madison Square, New York; an importer and manufacturer. JEWELS, SOLD SILVERWARE, WATCHES, CLOCKS, ETC. Engagement Rings! Probably the object of jewelry which a dealer in precious stones is most frequently called on to supply is the engagement ring. This is commonly a "single stone" ring, set with a diamond or a pearl. The choice is not necessarily restricted to one or the other of these two rings; other stones are often selected, and it is not unusual for more than one stone to be employed, as a pearl with two diamonds, or a ruby or a sapphire or an emerald with two diamonds. Sometimes three diamonds are used, one of some pronounced color in the middle, with a pure white one on each side of it. But as to the approriateness of the single stone, or "solitaire," there is never any question, and it is selected in by far the greater number of cases. As to the ring proper, the gold part, it should be of 18-carat gold, plain, simple, but elegant in design, of the best workmanship and finish, and of such form and weight as will insure its durability. It should always be hand-made. But the deepling interested buyer will ask, "What will my ring cost me?" It will cost whatever he may wish it to cost. The gold ring (single stone) such as has been described, when finished and ready to receive the stone, usually represents a cost of from $8 to $12. In it may be placed a diamond or a pearl costing $15; or $20; or $25; etc. and so on, step by step, up to many thousands of dollars. To the dealer it is only a matter of supplying a stone of the value needed to make a ring of any desired price. But the buyer should make sure that he is getting a stone of good quality, that posses genuine and unmistakable beauty and not simply one that though genuine has only the name of "diamond" or "pearl" to recommend it.

| One of my favorite reference books is Warman's Jewelry, 2nd edition by Christie Romero, Krause Publications, 1998. She has done an outstanding job in sharing information on jewelry hallmarks, etc. To find out basic hallmark information visit her site. It has excerpts from her book that you will need for reference! modernsilver.com/basichallmarks.htm | I've been coming across a lot of Native American jewelry recently and wanted to identify some of the symbols I have found on certain pieces. In my search for knowledge I came across a site that offers simple symbols of of Native American Indians and their meanings. Ex. Crossed Arrows means Friendship. americanindianjewelry/symbols.html |
| Ok... chances are you've come across jewelry that needs to be cleaned or has green gunk on it, etc. I've found THE best products on the market to remove green gunk, clean gemstones, and just about all types of metal. I suggest you pop over to this website (feel free to tell her Char of collectiblejewels.com sent you - there is no kickback for me - it's just my way of letting her know I'm promoting her products because she saved my tail when I discovered my personal drawer of jewelry had gone green!) In fact she wrote me the following email recently: Dear Char--- I have studied cleaners for almost 2 years prior to opening the site! Lots made it directly into the trash can. They either didn't work or were toxic or I just didn't like them. Toss your SimiChrome into the garbage, my dear. Radiance and Reflections put that product to shame. No nasty odor. Rinses clean away with no oily gunk and, best of all, it works with minimal elbow grease. Reflections, btw, is probably the BEST Bakelite testing solution, too. For the green gunk - Go to http://www.bubbles-n-baubles.com and click on metal cleaners. Order Riceez and you'll be VERY pleased! Jenny Stephens for Chloe Bijoux's Bubbles-n-Baubles NOBODY BUYS OLD DIRT! So my dear jewelbuds...I've given you the BEST advice I could possible you loyal visitors of collectiblejewels.com and I'm sure you'll be very happy at some point to have this information! |
I know some of you loyal customers of collectiblejewels.com have wondered why you've not received any newsletters for almost six months and why I've had no secret sales. it has been due to lack of time. A few of you may be aware that last year my grandaughter came to live with me - at the time she was only 6 months old. She is now still in my care and a whopping 18 months old! So I've been more or less a full-time mommygrammy since last June. For many years I've been a web designer and just recently made the decision to change direction - since I have been torn between Miss Nikki, web design clients and my love of collectible jewelry. I've decided to dedicate my time to my little Nicole and to my jewelry website and give up web designing. I plan to put more and more time and effort into making collectiblejewels.com the most informative site on the web! This newsletter is only the beginning! Ok, now I know you're just itching to see my grandaughter, ha! Here's a pic of Miss Nikki... the love of my life who has stolen my heart the day she entered this world...
