RARE 19th Century Chinese Coral Enamel KingFisher Necklace. Small 1mm Coral Beads woven in tubular peyote stitch with 2 Red Peking Glass Beads 7mm with a gilt pendant in the form a lantern? decorated on both sides with kingfisher feathers with a coral bead and kingfisher drop. There is some loss of Kingfisher feathers and the tubular beads have been roughly sewn together as it must've broken at some point. The tube of coral beads measures 21". From the Peking Glass Beads to the end of the last drop measures 5-1/2" long. Ornaments like these one were worn by women in the Mandarin Court and were symbols of wealth and status. Costly materials the coral imported from Italy, the rare feathers... the intensive labor, all combine to make this fragile beauty as rare and desirable as it was 150 years ago. For 2,000 years, the Chinese have been using the iridescent blue feathers of kingfisher birds as an inlay for fine art objects and adornment, from hairpins, headdresses and fans to even panels and screens. While Western art collectors have focused on other areas of Chinese art including porcelain, lacquer ware, sculpture, cloisonné, silk and paintings, kingfisher art is relatively unknown outside of China. Called tian-tsui (“dotting with kingfishers”), kingfisher feathers are painstakingly cut and glued onto gilt silver. The effect is like cloisonné, but no enamel was able to rival the electric blue color. Blue is the traditional favorite color in China. The finest pieces of kingfisher art were reserved for royalty or high-ranking Chinese government official (called a "mandarin (bureaucrat)"). Sadly, the usage of kingfisher feathers resulted in the mass slaughter of many kingfisher species.
Kingfisher art as a high art form came to an end during the Chinese revolution in the 1940’s.

PS880 Price: $30.00

Antique brooch from the Middle East or Central Asia. Master craftsmanship on this brooch with cut out detail work; the center circle is a lion with a sword, the second surrounding circle is a cut out feather like motif, and the last outer circle consists of cut out animals such as lions, boars and elephants. Since elephants are found in India... the thought is that this might be it's origin. The pin arm extends 3/8" past the edge of the brooch. This pin is in near excellent condition - slight wear line to the lion on the center front and a few spots on the underside. I have no information on this piece - I certainly wish I did! It measures 2-1/16" in diameter and is somewhat domed. It is not marked and I'm not 100% sure of the metal content.. SEE BACK
