![]() Queen Victoria insisted that her subjects mourn the passing of her dear Prince Albert, so the fashion for black clothes and jewelry lasted until her death. After 30 years of creating jewelry from natural Whitby jet from Yorkshire, demand exceeded supply. So it was, that black glass simulating Whitby jet, emanating from Gablonz, Bohemia, was the welcome alternative. Called French jet, pieces were faceted or molded, then fused or soldered onto a blackened base. These two French jet pendants are vintage late 19th century. The jet snowflake measures 4" across. It's amazing, being glass, that they survived this long. #1611A-B Price: $175 each

They are good luck charms, (called "nazarlik",) traditionally worn to ward off the "evil eye": negative energy from envious eyes. The pendants can be seen in Turkey and Greece hanging from cars' rear view mirrors and baby's cradles, as well as doorways and windows. They have been worn for centuries by children and adults mounted on chains, earrings, and bracelets. Girls braid them into their hair. The charm bracelets are stretchies hung with eye beads and elephants or crescent moons. Check out the pierced earrings with silver posts. There is a silver bracelet with glass eye beads.
