Queen Victoria insisted that her subjects mourn the passing of her dear Prince Albert, so the fashion for black clothes and jewelry lasted until her death. After 30 years of creating jewelry from natural Whitby jet from Yorkshire, demand exceeded supply. So it was, that black glass simulating Whitby jet, emanating from Gablonz, Bohemia, was the welcome alternative. Called French jet, pieces were faceted or molded, then fused or soldered onto a blackened base. These two French jet pendants are vintage late 19th century. The jet snowflake measures 4" across. It's amazing, being glass, that they survived this long.

I brought these blue and white glass "eye" beads home from the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. They are good luck charms, (called "nazarlik",) traditionally worn to ward off the "evil eye": negative energy from envious eyes. The pendants can be seen in Turkey and Greece hanging from cars' rear view mirrors and baby's cradles, as well as doorways and windows. They have been worn for centuries by children and adults mounted on chains, earrings, and bracelets. Girls braid them into their hair. The charm bracelets are stretchies hung with eye beads and elephants or crescent moons.

Check out the pierced earrings with silver posts. There is a silver bracelet with glass eye beads. The blue and white "evil eye" glass pendants (one inch wide) are so neat. A perfect stocking suffer from Turkey to you!

"Une Belle de Palaos", this exotic beauty was created in 1935. Jacoulet (1902-1960) used the Edo period Japanese woodblock print techniques in his own way, employing a richly colored palette very different from the subtler range of the Japanese artists. The subject with dreaming eyes is posed among orchids and anthuriums. The effect is almost surreal.

"Elle" magazine calls it "stingray" in their April accessories article, but for centuries in France, this durable luxury material was named after 18th century designer, Galuchat, who inlaid furniture with it. Fabulous jewelry and accessories were created in the Art Déco period. Americans call it sharkskin. The British named it shagreen. The durable skin of the stingray from Southeast Asian waters was dried, polished, and dyed, then inlaid in patterns for distinctive jewelry. Call it whatever you like, but the fashion for this material is timeless. Two cicada brooches of pastel Galuchat are
