This frothy ruffled collar by Robert Clarke for William DeLillo was commissioned by a private client in Monte Carlo in the 80s. Two tiers of Swarovski crystal beads and rhinestone rondelles (4" deep) are mounted on a gallery of crystal beads on wires. A spectacular piece, it measures 16" around the neck.

Bimini glass, Vienna 1930s

This cheery lampwork glass vase is attributed to Bimini glass, Vienna, 1930s. Founded in 1923 by Fritz Lampl, the delicate glass vases, goblets, and figurative animals were mouth-blown at the flame- so there are no pontil marks at the base. In 1938 Lampl fled the Nazis in Vienna to settle in London during the war. He died there in 1955. Trademark labels glued on with the artists's name fell off over time. The vase with the swan base measures 9" high.

Earrings designed by Countess Cissy Zoltowska in the 70s

These one-of-a-kind earclips, created from agate slices and carnelian beads, were designed by Countess Cissy Zoltowska in the 70s. Each one is different, designed to be worn as a left and right pair. I acquired these from Cissy after she moved to Los Angeles from Paris. They are not signed, but guaranteed attributed to her. In her heyday in Paris, ("CIS" under a crown was her signature,) she designed for many of the major French couturiers - from Jacques Fath to Balanciaga in the 50s and 60s, as well as her own line. She was a most original person and designer. They measure 3 1/2" from top to the bottom of the carnelian dangles. Truly rare! Leonard Foujita Print

Leonard Foujita created this print of a magnificently imperious Persian cat in Paris ca. 1950. Born in Japan, Foujita lived and worked most of his life in Paris where he was celebrated, especially in the Twenties, for his exquisitely detailed etchings and litho nude portraits of Montparnasse models, (Kiki, and Youki- whom he married,) café life, and especially, cats. These were not your cutesy-poo kittycats for tourists. He got inside their heads- they were CATS! Foujita was an eccentric Bohemian artist, friend of Matisse and Modigliani, who was awarded the Legion d'Honneur in 1925. This matted, framed delicious print is signed in the plate, and measures 20" X 17". It is hard to catch the colors and details thru the glass.

Large format, 18" X 24", hand -colored gouache pochoir print of four designs by Sonia Delaunay from her 1925 deluxe album, "Sonia Delaunay, ses peintures, ses objets, ses tissus simultanés, ses modes". The pochoir process was a stencil technique of print reproduction permiting flexibility from print to print. Since the gouache was applied by hand, there was a large potential for variation, and one-of-a kind prints. The medium paint flowing into the stencil provided a delicious freshness, unavailable in other reproductive processes. With the onset of the Depression in the Thirties, this hand-coloring process became too costly, and was replaced by the silk screen serigraph technique aplied by a machine press, instead of craftsmen manual skills.

The album cover, "Compositions Couleurs Idées" by Sonia Delaunay is a hand-colored pochoir created in 1930 in Paris. The contents of the deluxe album (10"X 13") were all hand-colored gouache prints by Delaunay who was dubbed "The Mother of European Modernism" by Robert Hughes, art critic of Time magazine. In the 1980s, the entire Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris was devoted to an exhibition of the paintings, textile designs, accessories, and clothes, murals for the Exposition Internationale of 1937, and other media work by Sonia and her husband, Robert Delaunay. Altho' the plates of this album were textile designs, Mme. Delaunay assured me in 1970 when I interviewed her in Paris, that they were essentially experiments in "Simultanéisme", the color theory the Delaunays were exploring in the 20th century.

Update of Lillian Baker's Plastic Jewelry of the 20th Century
Karima Parry wrote the Intro on the pricing of vintage plastic jewelry. My Intro explored "American vs. European Plastics". All the captions have been re-written, based on new info which has surfaced since Lillian wrote the book (i.e.: Jakob Bengel's huge contribution to Deco Galalith jewelry.) Celluloid, Bakelite, Catalin, Galalith, cellulose acetate, Tenite, and Lucite jewelry are all described and photographed in color- alongside vintage plastics ads. The value guide has also been brought up to date. Lillian would be astonished at the escalation of prices in the 10 years since she wrote the book!
