Do you have single earrings with no mates? A broken pin or two? Bits and pieces of old jewelry.
Don't throw them away!
Armed with an inexpensive glue gun and glitter glue, you can turn those loose bits and
pieces of jewelry into wearable, usable items! The glue gun is safe enough for children to use
with parental supervision, so keep this in mind for projects for children as well. I know of a few five
year olds that made a gorgeous picture frame implementing single earrings and gold glittler glue.
Wal-mart, K-mart and those dollar stores all sell inexpensive clear acrylic frames that can easily
be made into works of art. First you warm the glue gun...and put a layer of glue where you wish
to stick the earrings. Glue and stick... that is all there is to it. When you're all done, you can fill
in any gaps with the glitter glue to enhance the piece. Other items to make are wooden and
plastic boxes, glass jars, old lunch boxes. The kids love this creative outlet and so do WE!
If any of you need additional pieces of craft jewelry, you can always check Ebay and search
the words Craft Jewelry or Craft Jewelry lot. I also can send you a bag full for $5.00 if you're
interested. You'll also need a pair of pliers to remove the earring backs...
so keep that in mind as well.

'Sweetheart Jewelry' kept the home fires burning! by Don Kader

Because there is almost an endless number of categories in this area of memorabilia,
many collectors tend to concentrate on specific types of sweetheart items. One of the most
popular is that of "in-service" pins and other items relating to that genre.

As family members and close friends went to war, probably one of the more popular-and
certainly the most obvious indication for those at home to display their pride was the
wearing of the "service star" pin. This small item usually was a blue star on a white back-
ground bordered by a thin red stripe. The pins were primarily enameled over a brass or sterling
silver base, but 14 karat gold, cloth, plastic, wood and rhinestone items can also be found.

According to Nick Snider, author of two volumes on Sweetheart Jewelry and collectibles
(Schiffer Publishing, Atglen, PA), the tradition of wearing the service star can be documented
with the patent date of November 6, 1917, also printed on the original cards. The most
common is the one star pin but many will have more depending on the number of loved
ones in service. Rarest, of course, are the with five or more stars, and these are especially
collectible.

In addition, a Gold Star pin indicates a family member deceased while in service (the Gold
Star pin was authorized by an act of the U.S. Congress). Pins attached to the original cards
have considerably greater collectible value. Pins designating a particular branch or specialty
of service were also worn with pride by those at home.

The in-service star design can also be found on rings, pendants, brooches, bracelets,
pillow shams, window banners, flags, picture frames and many other home-front items.

With the end of WWII, the manufacture and distribution of sweetheart jewelry and collectibles
slowed down and by the Korean War had nearly vanished, although similar but not as exotic
items were still available through base exchanges and ship's stores. The Vietnam War
saw a slight resurgence, but the unpopularity of that conflict greatly diminished interest
 in sweetheart items.

Today, sweetheart jewelry and patriotic collectibles are keenly sought after by militaria
collectors and others who marvel at the range of items available and the place they
hold in the history of the United States and other nations. They are indeed, hot collectibles-
not only for their uniqueness but also for their sentimental and historical qualities.

Collector and author Don Kader has an area of Sweetheart Jewelry on the website. Feel free
to email him with any questions you might have.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT "Hobe"

The history of Hobe jewelry is long and lengthy.
They can be traced back to mid 19th century Paris around 1887. Jacques Hobe was a well known
master goldsmith recognized throughout Europe producing fine jewelry.

Hobe demonstrates the excellent and elegant designs with high quality stones embellishing
superior silver or gold plated metalwork. I myself prefer the Hobe jewelry of the 30's and 40's,
for Hobe had a distinct look which many attempted to copy. Working with Sterling and Gold over Sterling,
Hobe produced gorgeous silver work implementing bezel set semi-precious stones. Most of the these
silver pieces are highly collectible and they are getting harder to find and when you do they are expensive.

Post WWII Hobe jewelry is usually signed Hobe, a trademark registered in 1948 and in use since
January, 1926. There are several other marks used... some of which are pictured here:

I jumped on the link to the Hobe website (www.hobe-ltd.com) and read the
history...you might want to visit yourself!

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-DID YOU KNOW?*-*-*-*-*-*-*

When evaluating a collection or pricing for resale, using books can be
both informative an misleading. Clearly, some of the value guides are
more realistic than others. We must remember that these are only guides
and not meant to set the market value.

Rarely do I see collectibles of any nature going for "book" value. Some
collectible books are much lower than current market value of the items
contained therein and others are much higher. In fact, I've heard some
people accuse a certain glassware author/dealer of pricing things in his
books very low, so he can buy at those prices and then go to shows and
sell much higher. The same thing could happen in our world, if jewelry
guides were pricing on the low end instead of wildly overstated.

So how do we determine fair values? Can we base the prices we see on
the net and apply them to items we sell in malls or at shows and vice
versa? It's really not that simple. After all, some show and shop
prices are inflated to give the dealer room to discount deeply for their
customers. It's part of the psychological bargaining game that goes on
in dealing face-to-face with customers that is absent most of the time
on web sites and eBay. Not that I like it, WYSIWYG pricing works better
for me, but I'd rather bargain a little than miss out on something I
really want!

I think we should remember that jewelry values are ultimately determined
by the individual consumer. In that light, it doesn't seem realistic to
expect an author to write a value guide that applies to all
transactions. Whether buying for a collection or for resale, the
customer generally has an idea of what they feel is fair for any given
piece -- this isn't based on something written in a book. Sometimes it
is a gut feeling, sometimes it's based on a past transaction (or lack
thereof in the case of dealers who have been sitting on merchandise for
a while). In other words, we are all forced to come up with our own
guidelines for purchasing.

My advice is to use the books to determine what is rare and what is
common and then come up with your own buying/selling strategies.

The parcel arrived safely ........thanks so much, and thanks for the prezzie.
I collect these buttons.
In an earlier age they were used to anchor a lady's pince nez to her bosom.
Do you know how to trace American patents?
In the UK the British Library has the info (patents-information@bl.uk).
Just don't ask for too much info at one time or they get fretful.Cheers. Eithne

The package arrived just before noon today... they are just beautiful. I
can't wait to see the look on her face. And the extra surprise is wonderful;
that was very kind of you!

Thanks so much for taking care of things so quickly. I'll make sure I refer
you to all my friends.

You're the best.

Thanks,
Robert
