I had planned on this newsletter being issued bimonthly, but I've found that my time was limited and it couldn't be done. I will do my best to be more consistent in the future. "Instead of having the rug pulled from under your feet, learn to dance on a shifting carpet." Thomas F Crum ________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ JEWELRY HISTORY Opalescent Beads _________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ I suppose the best place to start would be the mountains of Bavaria/Bohemia & Gablonz. The mountain areas were and ARE famous for their glass-making and bead and gem making. "The most beautiful and expensive beads and buttons are the opalescent ones, which are achieved by adding bone ashes to the melt. Upon reheating they get their fascinating shade."* (* Johann C. Leuches, Neuestes handbuch fur Fabrikanten, Nurnberg, 1882) Way before Lalique induced a new craze for these beads in the 20th century... they had been in existence and reached their first peak of success in the 17th century as a mold-blown glass of Muranese origin. The German opalescent glass obviously had been developed independently from the Muranese, because it was made with different ingredients. The beadmakers of the Fichtel Mountains kept almost exclusively to the tradition in the way they wound the beads. They were done in a variety of beautiful colors but always rather plain in shape. Even the Empress of Brazil owned a rosary with beads from the Fichtel Mountains. Since the second half of the 19th century, the plain would beads were being replaced by plain pressed beads. The makers of the Fichtel Mountains lost their dominance. Bead, gem and button making here was reactivated after WWII when many Bohemian makers settled in this area. HERE is an example of a necklace with opalescent and frosted beads. Gablonz, circa 1920. The "frosted" glass - the glass with the inner cracks - was very popular in the 1920's on glass and on blown glass as well. The biconical beads have been pressed. Here is another, this one also incorporating turquoise colored glass hot dog shaped beads, and the opalescent beads on the ends are molded. _________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT "Vintage Advertising Ads" _________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ I discovered this wonderful catalog of jewelry from S. Kind in Philadelphia dated 1927, and it's full of information on the jewelry from that era. This advertisement brought a smile to my face: Lingerie Clasps Picture of Lingerie Clasps Yesterday, I celebrated my 45th birthday... and here is an advertisement from that magical year, for Krementz jewelry, of which I'm very fond: Krementz Ad Harper's Bazaar 1955 *-*-*-*-*-*-*-DID YOU KNOW?*-*-*-*-*-*-* Christie Romero has a section on Czech jewelry in her book "Warman's Jewelry" that has a lot of information and examples of jewelry. You can find out more about the book by clicking on the Bookstore link on my website. I am affiliated with amazon.com and she has since come out with a new edition since I updated the bookstore area. In regards to Czech jewelry... Make sure you check the jump rings of jewelry you buy. It's sometimes hard to see but they are often marked Czechoslovakia. Another good way to tell if a piece is czechoslavakian is to get acquainted with as much of the jewelry as you can. There ARE many great books on the subject: One being my favorite is Glass in Jewelry: Hidden Artistry in Glass put out by Schiffer Books. After awhile, you will notice the style and materials used and it will become easier to differentiate between the original czech jewelry and repros. *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- __________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ REVIEW: JEWELRY UPDATE/SALE __________________________________ I've updated the site again... and will continue adding pieces, hopefully DAILY from now until Christmas 2000.
