I've decided to change the format of the jewelry updates that you've
signed up to receive. Since you're a person with good taste and one who
appreciates beautiful jewelry, I couldn't help but assume you'd enjoy
learning more about it, it's history and it's designers. Please
feel free to offer me your feedback, your personal jewelry tips, articles
or anything you feel will improve this newsletter. Feedback for the website
is just as valuable, so feel free to share that as well! My goal is to serve
you better... and to make your experience a pleasurable one.

JEWELRY HISTORY

ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
Safety catches and fastenings feature prominently amongst the patents relating to jewelry production:
perhaps the most significant were those, beginning in the 1860's, for earring clips and screw-fastenings,
which offered women an alternative to piercing their ears. Crucial to the development of mass-produced
jewelry was the application of steam power to stamping machines that punched out both the basic shape
and the surface detailing of a piece in one rapid action. An example of this can be found on my Victorian
page item PU158.
In Britain copyright laws were introduced in 1842 which offered manufacturers protection
for new patterns or technical processes which might otherwise have been copied by rival
firms. Designs were registered at the Patent Office, and each piece made was then
stamped with a small lozenge-shaped mark that gave in code the name of the firm and
the date of registration. This system was used by firms specializing in inexpensive jewelry.
This is a blessing for it now identifies precisely the maker and the date of design of many
otherwise anonymous pieces.
Until the mid-19th century, virtually all Western jewelry had been designed and
made in Europe. In the United States comparatively little jewelry was worn before
the mid-century. Smaller pieces such as buckles and button had been made by local
craftsman in Boston and Providence, but most were imported from Europe. Tiffany in
New York, founded in 1937 as Tiffany and Young, initially sold only foreign goods,
items such as hair ornaments and gold and imitation gold chains from London, Paris
and Rome. By 1848 they had begun to produce their own gold jewelry, and were buying
large quantities of diamonds in Paris, where their price has fallen due to the unstable
political situation. Tiffany's importance grew rapidly and by the 1870's they had outlets
in Paris, London and Geneva and were taking part in major international exhibitions.
A WORD ABOUT PATENT NUMBERS...
Six digit patent numbers are usually *design* patent numbers.
Six digit *utility* patent numbers were issued in the 1800s,
when the numbers were not yet being stamped on the piece
(more often, the month, day and year the patent was issued will be found on
earlier pieces). If your piece is a Coro or Trifari with a six-digit number,
for example, that is a design patent - we know those companies weren't around
in the mid-19th century!
The year the patent was issued is not necessarily the year the piece was
made. Design patents are good for 14 years, utility patents for 17 years. But
the number will at least tell you the earliest possible date the piece could
have been made.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT "CORO"

ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
*Duette* is a trademark name of Coro.
Lots of other companies made Dress Clips which could be hooked together on a
back plate mechanism to be worn as one brooch pin. Lots of dress clips pairs
had no mechanism, they were only worn as clips, separately. If no mechanism is
present, it is better to not refer to them as *duette*. An example of an unusual
Coro duette can be found on my Coro Page or click here:

Coro did Sterling Craft in the 1940s and into the 1950s. It is often
confused with CoroCraft (or Corocraft) but is not the same thing. Coro
Sterling Craft is very collectible as is most definitely CoroCraft.
Sterling Craft consisted of handworked items, stamped and handwrought
sterling parts, pronged, handset stones, often unfoiled. Because of their
delicacy, these pieces are sometimes hard to find in good condition.
In the "Jewels of Fantasy" book on page 211 and 212 there is an article about
Coro and shows some trademarks for Coro.
This is the last two paragraphs of the article:
"In 1933 Cohn & Rosenberger opened a factory named Corocraft in England. At
the peak of its success, at the beginning of the 1950s, Coro had showrooms in
New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, San Francisco, Toronto, and Montreal.
In 1957 the Richton International Corporation of New York bought the
American assets of Coro, Inc., and continued to operate the factory in
Providence, producing costume jewelry until 1979. Coro Inc., has remained
operational in Canada, where it produces three lines of costume jewelry:
"Coro", "Vendome", and "Oscar de la Renta", with nearly 3,500 retail outlets.
Maryanne Dolan's book, "Collecting Rhinestone & Colored Stone Jewelry - An
Identification & Value Guide," Pages 21-169 shows the following marks for Coro.

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-DID YOU KNOW?*-*-*-*-*-*-*
For safely removing the green gunk off of jewelry due to moisture,
mix together a small amount of ketchup and mayonnaise -
(I am NOT joking!) apply a little, and scrub gently with a
soft tooth brush. After the stuff comes off, polish with a soft cloth or a
paper towel. Try to get all the "food" off. To prevent the green corrosion
from reappearing, I have carefully painted clear nail polish on the prongs,
after removing completely your secret cleaning mix. Another method is
to mix vinegar and baking soda...place the piece in this FIZZ and dry.
Don't use foil backed stones (rhinestones) with these methods. To
quickly dry your item, use a blow dryer! This will remove all the moisture
that might have gotten in corners and places you can't get at.

Just a short note to let you know that Gilda
(my rottweiler) is still hanging in there! I cook
up bones every other day...the motto is:
A bone a day will keep the doctor away?
She's falling more and more everyday, but
she never complains. God love her.
Last night, I went into the living room
and the pile of bones was laid out on the floor
in sort of a circle with some bones in the center
and Dan looked up at me and said,
"Welcome to Bonehenge!" I just roared...
