JEWELRY HISTORY
Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts

ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
At the end of the 19th century, small brooches were worn scattered in profusion
all over the bodice and, with different fittings, all over the hair. Larger corsage
ornaments such as 18th century style somachers and jewelled swags, which framed the
neckline and descended towards the waist, were also an important part of formal
evening dress. Around 1910 the new, less constricting lines of dresses were
complimented by a much simpler asymmetrical arrangement of two brooches linked
by curving strands of diamonds, or a single large brooch which could also be worn
on a headband or turban. Jewelled head ornaments, usually tiaras but also lighter
aigrettes and bandeau, remained an essential part of court and society dress in
Europe and America.
HERE is an example of a Victorian dog collar that might've also been worn as a
headband or bandeau for a woman of lesser means during that time period. Here is
another, this one set with imitation emeralds. Originally, this brass based piece was covered
in silverwash, as you can still see traces of it. Set with pronged brilliants, this piece is riveted
together and highly detailed.

The broad choker which fitted closely around the neck like a dog-collar was at its most
fashionable around the turn of the century, encouraged by Queen Alexandra who
wore one to cover a small scar on her neck. The deep band might be made of
separate jeweled plaques attached to a black ribbon, of descreetly hinged
metal panels, or of a central ornamental plaque flanked by multiple strings of
pearls. With the less constricting fashions of c.1910, longer necklaces appeared such
as the lavalliére, which consisted of two overlapping diamond-set chains
each with a slender jewelled pendant at the end. Longs strings of pearls or amber
beads were also worn.

Here is an example of yet another style of collar that was worn...or again, this could
well have been a bandeau! This one however, is more 20's in style for it has a trembler...
therefore an attached piece that moved while the woman danced!

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT "Van Dell and the 40's"

ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

Oh how I LOVE Van Dell! This jewelry designer/manufacturer is up there in
quality akin to Krementz. Over the years, their jewelry has held up well and
the finishes don't wear as do other 1940's era manufacturers in similar
styles and designs. Van Dell Corp. is still in business...founded somewhere
around 1939 and their known hallmarks are VAN DELL, Precious All and Younger
Lady. They started by manufacturing Sterling and Gold Plated jewelry set with
rhinestones and other imitation stones simulating gemstones. They also
used both Faux and Cultured pearls in their jewelry. As does Krementz,
their designs resemble FINE jewelry and their items are not cheap. I strongly
feel that Van Dell has not yet been appreciated and is an incredibly good
investment. I myself have quite a private collection...selecting only those
pieces that I know I'll wear often.

Most of the designs that I've seen are retro 40's...stylized gold filled
jewelry. Here's an example of a set that is on the site which is set
with imitation aquamarine colored stones.

What we do, how we act, and what we wear has always been dictated by society and world events.
If it weren't for World War 2, we wouldn't have all those great "retro" pieces from the 40's.
The inability to import European stones in large quantities and sizes forced the manufacturers
to create designs with fewer stones, opting to use one (or just a few) "rocks".
With the restrictions on metals, most of these pieces are sterling or vermeil (gold over sterling)
or gold-filled.

To celebrate Van Dell as a top quality designer and in time for Valentine's Day
gift giving, I'm offering Van Dell at 20% off the prices marked. This is my
secret sale only available to you, my loyal list members. The first list member
to purchase Van Dell, will receive a FREE pair of Van Dell earrings.

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-DID YOU KNOW?*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Chatelaines were an invention far before the Middle Ages?
They were used by the woman of the house or the head of the houseworkers
to keep all of the necessary bits and pieces of her trade, close at hand.

They included many things such as holders for sewing needles, small snipping scissors,
magnifying glass - and later on in the Victorian era things such as keys
(usually to the liquour cabinet and other valuables) and other such things were added
as they were invented and found necessary. They were very popular, as women did not
have pockets sewn into their clothing as we do today. They began as being worn as a loose belt
chain belt and later were worn as a necklace.

JEWELRY UPDATE/SALE

Happy Valentine's Day! Due to the lack of time
I've had to update the site and the fact that I've got an already
HUGE inventory, I've not added new items, but have instead, opted
to add a Kid's Corner and "Jewelry Just Like Mommy" section. The
jewelry you'll find here is made by my Mom who is 77 years old integrating the old beads with
new findings, in most cases. I've got THREE boxes more of her beautiful items sitting
here ready to be added. I need more time...however, go take a peek and see what I've got
there so far!

GREAT NEWS! One of the contributing factors to my lack of 'time' has been
the NEW ADDITION to my household. Born July 11th, 1999 I'm proud to announce
that 'Sheba' our baby rottweiler is getting adjusted to her new home with us.
After the loss of Gilda, I didn't think I could FALL in LOVE again! Ahhh...I did.
Sheba has brightened my days and has warmed my heart once again.
