JEWELRY HISTORY
Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts
_________________
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
Jewelry from the early 1900's can be divided into three main categories.
#1 - In the court of Europe, lavish quantities of formal diamond jewelry
continued to be worn. It had moved away from the revived Renaissance
motifs to lighter forms inpsired by the fashions of Louis XVI and the
First Empire. #2- In more artistic circles in Europe the freer forms of Art
Nouveau were being explored using colored stones and enamels. #3 - In Britain
there was a revival of traditional crafts and a reaction again mechanization.
Designers of the Arts and Crafts movement produced work that was characterized by the use of semi-precious stones and enamels and a hand-made look. Many chose their materials for their colour and texture in contrast to more valuable materials that were available. The Paris Exhibition of 1900 was at the center of this intensely colorful and elegant period, and the styles championed there continued with little change until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.

Fine Jewelry was almost entirely white, based on a lavish use of diamonds and pearls. The immense output of the South African diamond mines resulted in cheaper stones, and by the late 1880's over 90 per cent of Europe's diamonds came from there. Settings were made in white gold, and then increasingly in platinum - either of which gave a sympathetic white setting of greater strength than had been possible with sterling silver.

Most typical was the detailed and delicate 'garland' style, which showed in the designs of the Paris jeweller Cartier. Based on designs from Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, the jewelry featured garlands of laurel leaves, ribbon bows, tassles and cobweb-like trellises or lace patterns. It was a precise and elegant style, with the flowing yet restrained lines made extravagant by the concentration of diamonds. Fashions in diamond jewelry were similar throughout Europe and amongst the wealthiest Americans, although botanical imagery remained strongest in Paris. By 1910 an increasingly linear approach emerged, expressed in restrained arrangements of stones. Within these designs were the origins of Art Deco.

Rene Lalique at turn of the century France was the first jeweler to create
an extraordinary gold brooch of a woman with translucent plique a jour
enamel dragonfly wings. None has ever come close to surpassing this Art
Nouveau exquisite masterpiece. (Though many have tried.) Sarah Bernhardt,
the eccentric French actress, wore his jewels exclusively on stage, or even
when sleeping in her bed - which was a coffin. For more on Lalique see: THE
FLOWERING OF ART NOUVEAU, ART NOUVEAU JEWELRY, EUROPEAN DESIGNER JEWELRY, or
RENE LALIQUE (Books). Jewelers have been copying this motif for a
century.

Symmetalic is a registered trademark of W. E. Richards Company, founded in the 1902 in North Attleboro, MA. They mark their jewelry wRe. The trademark Symmetalic was first used in 1936. Symmetalic jewelry is usually made of Sterling Silver with a 14KT gold overlay and the designs were primarily those of the Edwardian and Art Deco influence. They produced a line of jewelry in sterling vermeil implementing cultured pearls and top quality stones. An example of Art Deco linear designs would be:
http://www.collectiblejewels.com/BS/bs038.jpg this piece produced by wRe. An example of Edwardian would be the Love Knot, which was a very popular motif at that time period. http://www.collectiblejewels.com/PS/ps235.jpg

Symmetalic jewelry was especially popular in the 1940's...where most of the motifs were more Nouveau in style. Links bracelets with openworked panels...flowing designs and motifs. In general, all of their jewelry exhibited quality designs and materials and incredibly fine workmanship.

Symmetalic jewelry is relatively rare and HIGH COLLECTIBLE. Look for Art Deco and Nouveau motifs and designs; pieces set with moonstones, aquamarines and pearls. Symmetalic is one of my favorite designers and I rank it up there with Krementz and Van Dell for quality... it holds up over the years as if it was just made!

Just a short note to let you know that Gilda
(my rottweiler) has passed away. She was in
too much pain to continue on. It's been two weeks
or so now...and she's been sorely missed, but my bright
thought is that in the future, I'll adopt another animal
to adore...thanks to all of those who wrote me. It was
very comforting...
