WELCOME SPRINGTIME!

ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

Just a quick note to wish you all a sunshine filled
Springtime!

Springtime is returning, the winter cold and grey,
With snow and nipping frost will soon have passed away.
Birds sing in the branches where budding leaves are seen,
And every dusky hedge is tinted o'er with green.
Now no more afar is heard the hunter's winding horn,
And with care the farmer guards his fields at early morn;
Springtime is returning, the winter cold and grey,
With snow and nipping frost will soon have passed away.

'Sweetheart Jewelry' kept the home fires burning! by Don Kader

No one is sure just when it began, but members of the Roman Legions
are believed to have given mementos of their service to their wives, sweethearts,
and significant others while fighting for their emperor. These baubles probably
the shape of coins from conquered territories strung together to form bracelets
or drilled for use as pendants. And the people who wore these items likely took
pride in showing that they cared about their loved ones away at war.

Centuries later, "sweetheart jewelry," as it has become known, proliferated
with each succeeding military confrontation and in nearly every country
engaged in these confrontations. During the Civil War, for example, gold pins and
rings engraved with regimental crests appeared, as did items fashioned from
cannon balls and shell casings that became known as "trench art."
(An example of TRENCH ART can be found HERE.)

But it wasn't until World War I that sweetheart jewelry and other war related items
capturing the spirit of patriotism appeared in great quantity. Most of the items were
massed produced, but many were handmade one-of-a-kind pieces distinctively
designed for that person dearest to the serviceman's heart. For the collector,
these unique items are a real find.

World War II signaled the apex of sweetheart and patriotic items with literally
thousands of various pieces being available. Clothing and accessory manufacturers
were strictly regulated as to the amount of material they could use to fashion
wearing apparel, especially women's wear. Jewelry manufacturers took advantage
of these restrictions by offering pins, earrings, bracelets, lockets, pendants,
and a preponderance of other service-oriented fashion items. Thus, women
could "dress up" their rather drab wartime ladies' wear while at the same time
saluting and honoring their loved ones in the service and displaying their
patriotism.

Sweetheart items have been fashioned of gold, sterling silver, aluminum, brass,
bronze, base metal, mother of pearl, tortoise shell, wood, Bakelite, plastic, and
fabrics-in fact, almost every malleable material has been used in producing these
wondrous pieces. Some items are oriented to a particular branch of the service
(i.e. Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, WAAC, WAVE)
while others reflect the specialty armored engineering, infantry, military police, seabees,
submarine service, quartermaster, etc.). Seemingly there is no end to the various
combinations and categories that have been depicted on sweetheart jewelry.

Harry Iskin, Philadelphia Pa. Succeeded by Iskin Manufacturing Company between 1931 and 1943. Manufacturers of Masonic charms, society emblems, class pins, trophies, medals in white gold and platinum mountings. Often the Hallmark is mistaken for International Harvester, but when you see a Harry Iskin logo, you'll know who it is. http://www.collectiblejewels.com/harryiskin.html
Harry Iskin produced jewelry mostly during the 1940's stylized retro period and his jewelry has become very collectible and harder to find. Harry Iskin jewelry can be seen in the book "Forties and Fifties Popular Jewelry" by Roseann Ettinger.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-DID YOU KNOW?*-*-*-*-*-*-* Green gunk is serious! Take Action! The green gunk on costume jewelry is called verdigris. It is corrosion caused by moisture. It can spread throughout a piece as well as to other pieces stored with the "sick" one. It can eventually destroy an entire piece. Do not store pieces in air tight plastic bags as moisture can become trapped in there and cause this problem. After cleaning pieces, especially those with rhinestones, dry, dry, dry. Remaining moisture can get trapped between the stones and setting causing verdigris (green gunk). A piece that already has verdigris can be helped by using a mixture of one tablespoon of salt and one tablespoon of vinegar in very hot water. An old soft toothbrush is a good tool to use to get the solution into the crevices. Then ,dry, dry dry. A blow dryer or fan set on "low" is good. *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- __________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ REVIEW: JEWELRY UPDATE/SALE __________________________________ IF you wish to skip past the 'splash' page...BOOKMARK: http://www.collectiblejewels.com/indexframes.html SHORTCUT: NEW ITEMS PAGE ONLY can be found at: http://www.collectiblejewels.com/New.html This above URL is a list of the great new additions to the website.
